Those were the days when a young unknown amateur photographer with no media connections could ask to take a picture and be given a pass. Not only was I allowed up close, with Carlos towering right over me, I got to meet him afterwards. He just sat, posed for me and talked. I saw Carlos again on a return visit, and after a fantastic performance I was able to give him a set of 16”x20” prints. Waiting in line to see him, a young woman in front of me said to him, “You’re a Leo, and that means you must have big ego.” I thought she was being deliberately provocative and rude. But he answered with such grace saying, “Ego is like fire, it can consume or it can burn bright within. That’s the kind of ego I value.” Carlos is still performing and touring.
