James Reyne in Australian Crawl performing at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl
I had the pleasure of working with James and the band in my early years in Melbourne. I was shooting for the Crawl File album cover (released in 1984) in an after-hours studio session in Peter Walton’s South Melbourne studio. I wanted the images to be as live and real as possible, so the band set up as for a real gig and we got going. As these things do, once the juices started to flow, the boys “lit up” and hit their straps. They played and I shot until, during a brief break, the phone was ringing. Who could be calling the studio at this hour? It was Peter saying the neighbours had called to complain about the noise and could we please shut down. I realised it was 1am and we’d been going since just after 6pm! Great gig! Well, for me anyway. The group disbanded a couple of years later in 1986 and James went on to a solo career. He is still performing and touring.
