David Bowie playing saxophone in his Serious Moonlight Tour, VFL Park, Melbourne 1983
Paul Dainty brought Bowie’s Serious Moonlight Tour to town. I wanted to photograph the concert, but the answer was no. Not to be defeated in the face of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I took my cameras anyway, stripped them down into components, gave friends different parts, splitting the film among us. Inside I collected my bits and put my gear back together. While shooting away I saw a big burley “security goon” coming at me. He reached over the fence trying to grab my camera. I pulled back just in time. I hung back a bit out of sight as I’d got some good shots didn’t want to risk getting my gear or film taken. After his encore, Bowie threw his towel into the audience. Without thinking I went for it and came down to find myself looking at a young woman determined not to let go of her half of the towel. I wanted it for my sister, who was a big fan. So I got my Swiss army knife and we agreed to cut his sweaty towel in half. She got her bit of Bowie and my sister got hers. I got good shots, and a better story.
